gematria is the practice of assigning numerical values to words, sometimes called "cipher numerology". This is a process of interpretation in which words or phrases are counted and their numerical values assigned according to some specific system of so-called "ancient" Hebrew or Greek Gematria cipher methods. As with many other forms of numerology, this has been a popular method for interpreting texts from ancient Assyrian and Babylonian civilizations.
In Assyrian and Babylonian cultures, certain texts and words had very symbolic meanings. Therefore, in order to understand these messages more clearly and accurately, ancient scholars used gematria to decode them into numerical values. This could include the sum of all the letters used throughout the text in question, their numerical values combined with a set of proposed codes attributed to the letters themselves. By interpreting these codes and attempting to match them with certain objects or ideas related to those numerical values assigned in Gematria calculations, certain patterns of meaning could be revealed.
Archaeologists have discovered many artifacts from ancient Mesopotamian civilizations that provide various interpretations through gematria calculations. For example, tablets bearing symbols that correspond to numbers derived through gematria provided an important religious-cosmological foundation for these civilizations through which they interpreted natural phenomena like the movements of celestial bodies or changes in climate patterns. In addition, some inscriptions discovered on ancient jewelry or weapons were also decoded using Gematria providing further evidence suggesting that this form of numerology was widely used by ancient Babylonians and Assyrians during their time.
